Why is E85 exceeding the price of Regular Unleaded

IMG_0840For the past four months I have seen an increase of E85 gasoline at the pumps. In August I paid 1.98 a gal at my favorite station. The price of regular gas rose and so did the E85. Gas prices jump about 25 cents when they go up. E85 goes up 10 cent on the average. The most interesting thing I noticed is that E85 does not go down. For the last three month my favorite gas station’s prices on E85 stayed at $2.29. Regular gas goes up and down, but the E85 stayed consistent. In the past week gas prices have dropped from $2.65 – $2.33. I went to my favorite gas station; by the way it is 8 miles from my house, to see if E85 has gone down. I almost had a heart attack when I saw the price at $2.54 a gal.

The whole idea for using E85 is it takes away some of our countries dependence on foreign oil. This project started in 1999. My car was one of the first to take advantage of this project. I drive a 99’ Plymouth Grand Voyager. I like the price difference despite the rumors of poorer gas mileage. I also have enjoyed a stable pricing system that keeps the anxieties away that are caused by price spiking at the pumps. But given a choice of two types of fuels, I choose the one that cost less.

If the price of E85 stays above the regular unleaded price, the fuel will stay in the tanks and go bad. The few stations that sell E85 will not carry it anymore. Our dependency on foreign oil will increase and the whole thing will go crazy.
